Mari Vaggalati is a designer of leather trinkets...
inspired by Greek design tradition as recorded especially in leather bindings of books of the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine period.
Bookbinding is one of the arts and crafts which have remained essentially the same from the first Christian centuries, right down to our times. The technique of leather decoration is mastered by very few highly qualified people who study under old masters of the art in Greece, England and France. Mari Vaggalati has studied the technique of blind leather decoration but also of leather decoration with gold leaf, which is even more delicate and complicated and has applied it on the decoration of leather trinkets: earrings, bracelets and other jewels and objects of high aesthetics.
Applying old, traditional decoration techniques on the decoration of modern jewels is a challenging and creative process that reveals the dynamic dialogue between the past and the present as experienced by young designers. Mari lives and works in Corfu, the beautiful Ionian island whose history bridges the aesthetic traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Greek mainland with the Italian heritage of beauty, elegance and high artistry.
